“Generally we find with Latinas, that their parents don’t want them going to away from home, especially a four-year . So they don’t learn about it. Many of these girls have never been to a college campus before, let alone thought about attending,” he said.









Through the Latinas in Progress program, Martinez received a scholarship and attended the University of North Texas in Denton. While attending college, Martinez volunteered with the program.

Escobedo is one of many Latinas not leaving the nest for college. Though they are attending 2- and 4-year colleges in greater numbers than their male counterparts, many wind up choosing s near their parents. While finances are a commonly documented factor in that decision, some research and anecdotal evidence has indicated there is an underlying issue: family responsibility.
