“Risen Christ” was commissioned in 1514 by Metello Vari, the nephew of a wealthy Roman patrician, Marta Porcari, whose will required her heirs to build a chapel in her memory in the church of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva in Rome. Documents show that Vari asked Michelangelo to sculpt a life-size figure of a standing, nude Christ holding a cross.
