Fake Nudes is the best BNL album in a long time and maybe the best every. “Canada Dry” is a smashing start. “Lookin’ Up” gets me smiling and moving, “Bag O’ Bones” is Beach Boys, “Township of King” is a pretty, folksy ballad, “Invisible Fence” in Trump’s face. The album title is typical clever BNL. What is not to like?
I’m legitametly SHOCKED how much I like the new BNL album. Silverball was bland and uninspired, while here they go back to their acoustic roots quite often. Songs like Canada Dry and Sunshine prove that Steven Page isn’t needed for BNL to produce great songwriting. Kevin Hearn is the star of this album, not a single one of his songs on here is bad! Bag Of Bones is They Might Be Giants inspired fun, Township of King is a folk wonder, and Invisible Fence is extremely catchy, if not a political commentary. Fake Nudes isn’t perfect. While not terrible, Lookin Up is a poppy and slightly desperate attempt at a hit, and the middle of the album is kind of dry. But even with that said, Fake Nudes is pretty good and definitely their best studio album since Page left.
This is a weird album, it’s a really weird album in fact. That’s certainly not a bad thing, though. After 2015’s mediocre “Silverball” album, I’m glad to see the boys pushing in new directions, and it has definitely worked. I consider “Fake Nudes” to possibly be the most diverse BNL album of all time. A lot of musical genres are represented here, and all the band members get a chance to shine. Quite a few tracks even see BNL going back to their acoustic roots a bit. Kevin sings a whopping 6 songs on this album, which is something that the band has never done before, and it’s a nice fresh breath of air. I recommend this album to any long-time BNL fan. Top 5 tracks, at the moment, would have to be “Canada Dry”, “Sunshine”, “Dusty Rooms”, “Navigate” and “Nobody Better”. Weak songs are “Lookin’ Up” and “Bag of Bones”.
